Definition |
Praralysis or weakness of the muscles supplied by the facial nerve. |

Prognosis |
60% recover completely, in about 30% there is considerable improvement, but in the rest 10%, there is permanent disfigurement. Poor prognosis in Bell’s palsy is indicated by dense paralysis initially, advanced age, hyperacusis, and severe pain at onset. The presence of imcomplete paralysis during the first week is very favourable sign. |

General Measures |
Close and patch ipsilateral eye.After 2 weeks of onset, galvanic stimulation is given to affected side of face, but is doubtful value.Strapping of face with sticking plaster, if there is excessive dropping of cheek.Gentle facial massage with palm, with upward movement of drooping cheek several times a day is advised as mild form of physiotherapy, and is a psychological booster to patient. |

Advice to Patient |
Explanation and reassurance on full recovery in the majority. Assure patient that this id not a kind of stoke of precursor of one. |

Inadequate Response |
In 10% cases, in a small number aberrant regeneration with ‘crocodile tears’. Surgical decompression is a controversial step and has been largely abandoned. |
